November is Caregiver's Month and today the SOWEGA Council on Aging recognized and educated some of the people who are doing this important work.
First United Methodist Church was the site of the bi-annual Caregiver's Summit.
SOWEGA Council handed out awards for the caregivers of the year at the event.
Organizers say that it's important to recognize caregivers with events like this one, since many caregivers find themselves taking on the task alone.
"We wanted to give the caregivers a reason to get some rest and come out and have a good time and just associate with other caregivers to see that someone else is in the same situation," said Ada Brown, the Coordinator of the Family Caregiver Program for the SOWEGA Council on Aging.
According to the AARP, there are 44 million people nationwide who are caregivers. And while care giving is usually though of as a female occupation, 39 per cent of them are males.
