(RNN) – If you received word that your Twitter account password was reset, no need for concern, most likely your account was not hacked.

The San Francisco-based company said a routine security precaution was mistakenly applied to more users than it had intended.

"In this case, we unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts, beyond those that we believed to have been compromised," the statement on its status page read.

After some users believed this could be a hacking situation, Twitter has said if you've received and email from them, it's safe to change it.

"Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter. We've reset your password to prevent others from accessing your account," the email said.

However, users will not be able reuse old passwords.

Twitter has apologized for any confusion caused by the password resets.

The company did not specify the number of accounts that were affected.
