Education leaders react to amendment one passing

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Many local school board members opposed the charter school constitutional amendment, but a couple Dougherty County school board members say they're pleasantly surprised it passed.

The amendment allows a new state commission to issue charters for private operators to run independent public schools.

In June, the Dougherty County board voted against a proposed charter school.  Now some members hope this amendment may help them in the future.

"You're going to have people who really care about having a quality college career academy, they now can pull together as a group put together a charter and go directly to the state. They don't have to come through the local school board," said Darrel Ealum, Dougherty County school board member.

"I feel like citizens of Georgia are tired of the way public education is performing. And the quality of education produced. So I think it's great that we've got an option," said Carol Tharin, Dougherty County school board member.

Governor Nathan Deal had pitched the amendment as a way to give Georgia families more educational options.
