AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

People in two south Georgia communities will soon be able to buy alcohol on Sundays. Voters in Terrell County and Americus each passed a Sunday sales referendum Tuesday night. Some business owners believe it will generate more money into the local economy.

ABC Package store in Dawson is one of the few liquor stores you'll find along the road between Dawson and Columbus. Now it has the ability to be one of the few package stores in South Georgia to sell liquor on Sundays.

Terrell county voters Tuesday approved Sunday package sales with 57% of the vote.

Just to north in Americus voters approved Sunday alcohol sales for restaurants, after having failed at the polls last November.

Luis Duran manages The 1800 Mexican Restaurant in downtown Americus. It's been open about 45 days, and business has been good, but on Sundays...

"After church, we're busy But after 5:00, it's slow. I think a lot of people go out of town to get wind or a drink with dinner," said Duran.

With 58% of the vote, Sunday liquor by the drink passed easily. "I think this new law is going to increase business for me and all the restaurant people here,"

The measures don't come without criticism, but it did come down to a vote that's faced many a Georgia voter, to sells drinks or not to sell drinks on the Sabbath.

Ashburn voters also passed a liquor by the drink referendum. Aside from Terrell County Sunday package sales have also passed in Damascus, Coolidge, Richland, Lake Park, and Valdosta.
