Thomasville linebacker Mario Mathis is less than a year from a historic milestone in his family. Mathis is one of our WALB Top Ten members and says he'll be one of the first people in his family to be a high school graduate.
He credits not only his own but his adoptive family, the Fletchers, for being the rock of his foundation. Mathis is staple in the Bulldog defense but wanted to be basketball star before being influenced to play football by his brother.
He says he wants to be a role model for others to follow and wants to show that even with a troubled past, the future can still be bright for those who have the burning desire to change.
Mathis said "I changed a lot because in the past I used to be one bad kid. People can change. As soon as started seeing that grades were going to be important and that you really want to go do something. What really got me started is my family. My mom is struggling right now in Albany and I just want to pursue my dream and try to graduate college and get my degree so I can support my family. "
Mathis is being recruited by several Division I and II schools and plans on major in sports medicine
