COOK COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

The heated sheriffs race in Cook County drew many people to the polls today.

WALB was first to report that Democratic candidate Doug Hanks won by 57.2 percent. Republican candidate Denny Folsom followed with 37.3 percent and Independent candidate Anthony Williams finishing in third with 5.6 percent.

All three candidates spent the day campaigning near one of the three precincts in Abel and said they all have a plan to balance the department's budget and better utilize resources.

Folsom says, "We want to be able to balance the budget and make sure that we provide the best service that we can to the citizens without raising their taxes like we've had to do this past year."

But Williams says the budget can easily be fixed and eliminating the drug problem in cook county needs to be a priority.

"The interstate is not being worked like it should. We need a drug team because our drug task force just got cut off so we need someone working drugs here locally," says Williams.

And as for Hanks, he believes it's a matter of providing quality services to citizens in the county.

"We hope to bring a quicker response time to the citizens and maybe put a lot more patrol units in the county," says Hanks.

Hanks says he will begin implementing his new plans for the Cook County Sheriff's Department in January.
