ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Communication is key, especially in disasters, but hundreds of city employees are using radios more than 16 years old.
Tuesday, commissioners voted to spend more than $718,000 to upgrade the system.
They plan to buy 123 portable radios, 168 mobile radios and a control station for various city departments.
Engineering, the fire department, public works, the airport and the recreation department all use the outdated equipment.
"If you were here in 94, the cell phones you could not use them the landlines we out. So communications were definitely a problem for us so this will allow us to communicate very effectively," said Wes Smith, Assistant City Manager.
The purchase will be made through a state contract with Motorola.
