VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A Valdosta woman is out of the hospital, recovering from multiple stab wounds. Valdosta Police say if not for a witness who yelled at the man to stop, the woman may have been killed.

42-year-old David Harris is behind bars, accused of stabbing his girlfriend 52-year-old Barbra Johnson multiple times late Friday night.

Valdosta Police say a man witnessed the attack and most likely prevented Harris from stabbing her to death.

"Our witness yelled at Mr. Harris and we believe that's why he stopped and fled the scene, and so we are extremely grateful that we had someone at the home that stood up and tried to intervene in this case," said Valdosta Police Commander Brian Childress.

Childress says the couple had been dating for several years and they got into an argument that led to the attack.

Neither of these people actually live in the home. Police say she was visiting when they got into an argument and he came over with a knife.

One neighbor says it's terrible to see an act of domestic violence happen in her own neighborhood.

"No one should have the right to injure another person because of anger. Many times the abuser wants to say that the person pushed him or her to do this, no one has a right to do this to anybody else, and I'm glad that she is alive," said Joyce Lewis.

Childress says Harris fled the scene Friday night. But investigators found and arrested him Saturday and he confessed to stabbing his girlfriend.  "Generally what happens in a family violence case and this one will probably be the same I'm sure of it, is that when he is released, if he is released, there will be a condition in the bond that says he has to stay away from her."

Johnson was released from South Georgia Medical Center today and is expected to be okay.

Harris is charged with an aggravated assault, and police say more charges may be filed.  He remains in the Lowndes County jail.
