ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The U.S. Postal Service will hold a public meeting to discuss its proposal to close the Albany Downtown Station at 345 West Broad Avenue.

The meeting will take place at 3 p.m., November 20, in the Kirkland Conference Center at Albany Technical College, 1704 South Slappey Blvd.

With the deep decline in mail volume due to current economic conditions and continuing electronic diversion, the Postal Service is exploring ways to reduce expenses including consolidation of retail facilities that are close in proximity.

The lease at the Downtown Station will expire on December 2, but the Postal Service has extended the lease for six months.

Postal officials will explain their future plans at the public meeting which will provide an opportunity for the community to comment and seek possible alternatives such as a Contract Postal unit.

The Postal Service continues to serve its customers on www.usps.com and at other Albany locations: Main Post Office at 1501 Slappey Blvd, Mock Road Station at 328 South Mock Road, and Lafayette Plaza at 2823 Meredyth Drive.
