Leaders say farewell to DCP Chief Cheek

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany and Dougherty County leaders honored County Police Chief Don Cheek Monday and wished him well, as his days on the job dwindle down.

Dozens of people thanked Cheek for his years of service at the retirement celebration.

Commission Chairman Jeff Sinyard presented him with an award as folks shared their favorite memories of Cheek.  His last day is Friday.

He says the motorcycle-themed party is an example of the great people he's worked with.

"This is what this has always been about through the years is the people.  Serving the community has been a fabulous thing. But the people I've had the opportunity to work with, and for, has just been phenomenal.  And that's what I'm going to miss the most," said Cheek.

In September, Cheek announced his retirement because of health reasons.  The 64-year old was diagnosed with leukemia in May.

He has worked in law enforcement for 41-years, the last 9 and a half as Chief of the Dougherty County Police Department.

Now he's looking forward to spending time with his family and riding his motorcycle.
