AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

The power of prayer - for some it's a daily ritual. For others, it's a plea when times are tough. But for nearly 400 people in Americus, Sunday afternoon's prayer service was a time to ask for guidance and blessings.

"Its a time to pray. Our nation is in trouble right now and if we don't pray, we don't know what's going to happen," says Deborah Law who was in attendance.

Saint John's Anglican Church says they felt a need to bring people together to pray for a divided nation and an upcoming presidential election.

"We need to have God back into the nation, back into the leadership our of nation and back into the government," says event coordinator Reggie Daniel.

But leaders say it wasn't about Democrats or Republicans.

"This was not a partisan effort. This was not an effort to say you should vote for one party or another," says Rev. Don Hutchens with St. John's.

But instead, a time for the community to ask the Lord for advice.

"We need to ask God to give us guidance to vote for the those who would lead us back to those principals, lead us back to those things that God gave us in the very beginning. That was the dreams of the founders of this country. We've come a long way from it and only God can get us back there," says Hutchens.

And folks say, prayer is the direction we need during one of the country's most crucial times.

"Prayer changes everything. He should be in all our lives. He says if we acknowledge him in all our ways, he would direct our path," says Law.

Sunday's service was a free event and leaders say they hope it will encourage everyone to get out and vote on Tuesday.
