TIFT CO., GA (WALB) -
Children in Tift County got to see where their food comes from Friday.
About 700 third graders participated in the 9th annual Children's Farm Day.
It is hosted by high school students with the Tift County Agriculture Education Department and FFA.
Tift County third graders got out of the classroom and spent the day on the farm.
"I have met a cow, goats, piglets," said Kendall Homer, 3rd Grader.
Farming is a multi-billion dollar industry in Georgia, but many children have never seen a farm.
"It is such a big part of our community and we want our children to be exposed to what all agriculture has to offer for them, as it is related to our economy, to career opportunities," said Craig Matthews, Career Technical and Agriculture Education Director.
9 year old Kendall Homer already knows she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.
"I love animals so much, and I just love taking care of them," said Homer.
That is why she paid extra attention to the cow milking demonstration.
"So we can learn more for our jobs when we grow up," said Homer.
Tift County high school students led the presentations for the 700 third graders, exposing them to all aspects of agriculture.
"Wildlife and forestry, we are learning about cotton, row crops, we are learning about fruits and vegetables, we are learning about livestock," said Matthews.
Without the lessons they learn today, many of these children might think their food comes from a grocery store.
"I think kids are surprised to see where some of these products that they take for granted come from, they come from the farm," said Matthews.
Like the farm these kids enjoyed visiting Friday.
This was the first year the event was held at Tift County Schools STAR Farm off of Highway 319.
