The nation's employers added 171,000 jobs in October, the Labor Department announced Friday, in the last assessment of the job market before the presidential election. The unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9 percent, from 7.8 percent in September.
The gains for the previous two months were revised upward by a total of 84,000.
The report was based on surveys conducted too early in the month to capture the work stoppages across the East Coast from Hurricane Sandy.
