Dougherty County Jail inmates earn their GEDs

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty County Jail is working to give inmates tools they need to succeed in society once they get out of jail.

Wednesday, inmates Cory Mathis and Anderson Williams received their GED's during a ceremony at the Jail.

The jail works with Albany Technical College to teach the GED classes.  About a dozen inmates have graduated, and about three dozen more are close to earning their GED's.

Jail officials say educating inmates helps their future prospects and the community as a whole.

"We're looking for these inmates who finish this program, whether they go to prison, whether they get out in the next few days or weeks, that they'll take this GED, this higher education that they gotten and apply it to their everyday lives."

The GED test costs 150 dollars.

That cost is paid for through private donations. If you would like to help, you can write a check to the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office and designate it for the GED program.
