WOOD COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A group of protestors against the TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline are voicing their opposition to the project in East Texas – this time with a presidential candidate.
Green Party Presidential Candidate Dr. Jill Stein has joined the Tar Sands Blockade protesters in Wood County in their effort to stop construction on the pipeline.
Dr. Stein has been arrested by deputies in Wood County and taken to the Wood County Jail. She has been charged with criminal trespassing.
The project by Canadian-based TransCanada would construct a pipeline from western Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast.
Green Party Media Coordinator Scott McLarty said the party fully supports Dr. Stein.
"[We] believe the American people are being fooled by the pipeline plans. We need to reduce fossil fuels, not expand their consumption," McLarty said.
This is not the first arrest for Dr. Stein's campaign. Earlier this month, at the Hofstra presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican Nominee Mitt Romney, Stein and her runningmate Cheri Honkala were arrested, according to her campaign.
Earlier this month, a visiting district judge issued a temporary restraining order against the Tar Sands Blockade and some individuals that had previously been arrested in Wood County.
