ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Strong winds quickly spread a grass and trash fire in a vacant lot on North Magnolia near Camp Lane about 12:15.

Purvis Auto Repair Owner Buddy Purvis said he saw the smoke at his business next door, and used a water hose to try to beat back fast spreading flames as it threatened a compressor and storage tanks in his yard near the fence separating the properties.

"The fire had already got through the fence and so we got it put out with a hose on that side. Right inside that building I keep all my waste oil barrels. There is about 300 or 400 gallons of burnt motor oil. If it got in there we would have a mess," Purvis said.

Several mobile homes were being dis-assembled on the lot, and trash from those buildings was scattered in a dumpster and the ground around it. Firefighters say the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Purvis' business sustained no damage.

He thinks someone threw a cigarette in the lot, setting the dry grass on fire, starting the blaze.
