Teacher suspended after striking student

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An administrative hearing for a Dougherty County school teacher accused of hitting a student results in a board recommendation to suspend her for 30 days without pay.

She must also attend an anger management course, be reassigned to another school and also be placed on probation once she goes back to work.

The action was taken after the school board produced a video which appears to have captured the act.   However, the board voted against the superintendent's recommendation to terminate her.

Tracy Drayton, a P.E. teacher at Turner Elementary, was removed from the classroom after she was accused of slapping a kindergartner across the face on October 2nd.

Howard Stiller, Drayton's attorney, says she did use an open hand to hit the girl. He says she had a momentary lapse in judgement, and that the child has had some behavior problems.

Flin Coleman, the Dougherty County School System attorney, showed board members video clips of P. E. classes at Turner Elementary, one of which shows Drayton striking a student.  Another clip shows Drayton pulling that student across the gym.

After showing the video Coleman rested, he did not call any witnesses.

Stiller called on three witnesses.  His first witness was Gail Solomon, the principal of Turner Elementary.  She testified that the child has tantrums and behavioral problems.

Closing arguments were waived.  It took board members less than 30 minutes to come up with their decision.

T. Gamble served as the hearing officer. Four Dougherty County school board members acted as a jury and to make the final decision on whether to terminate Drayton.
