LEARY, GA (WALB) -

The Southwest Georgia Pecan Company in Calhoun County caught fire this morning.

Calhoun County Firefighters were dispatched to 3638 West Main Street in Leary, shortly before 12:30 this morning.

After arriving, they saw heavy flames coming out of the shed. At least three dry bins that are used to dry pecans caught fire.

It took them an hour and a half to get everything under control. They had to use an excavator to take the bins away from the building.

The damage will run into the thousands.

"The hardest thing was they had no water supply. All the water had to be tanker ed to us to help us fight this fire. The closest fire hydrant was almost 2,500 feet away," said Calhoun County Fire chief Richard Martin.

Southwest Georgia Pecan plant will be closed until further notice.
