SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

As Hurricane Sandy heads towards the east coast, so are about a half dozen volunteers with the Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Husband and wife Marty and Cindy Jones, Linda Davis, and Ricky Voisine are all heading to Ashburn, VA where they will be staged for Hurricane Sandy. The team also brought along with them two emergency response vehicles (one from Savannah, the other from Brunswick) filled with supplies that will be needed in the damaged areas - including food and clean up kits - in anticipation of the needs before, during, and after Hurricane Sandy.

Three members of the response team are expected to return on November 5th, while the fourth team member said he'll stay as long as needed.

Also on standby are Red Cross Nurses, Mental Support Workers, Government Liaison Personnel, Mass Care and Sheltering Personnel. All Red Cross trained personnel are subject to be called to go at any time.

The Red Cross encourages everyone who has family or friends living in Sandy's path to remind those folks there is one more day left to make preparations before the storm is expected to make landfall. One way to do that is to contact loved ones now and let them know about the Red Cross online website called "Safe and Well", a website that allows those in affected areas to post an online message letting their loved ones across the country know they are safe.

To use the online tool, go to www.redcross.org. After going to the website, registrants' can click on the "List Myself as Safe and Well" option. Example messages include "I am safe and well", "currently at shelter", and "will make phone calls when able." Or, registrants can create their own messages on the site and concerned family and friends can go to the site and read them by clicking on the search option.

Those who want to help can make a donation to support Red Cross Disaster Relief by visiting www.redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. People can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Contributions may also be sent to local American Red Cross chapters or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
