Albany volunteers help cleanup Flint River

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Every day trash piles up along the Flint River, but Saturday, a lot of that trash was picked up.

It was for the 9th Annual Rivers Alive, a state initiative that encourages people to clean more than 70,000 miles of Georgia's rivers, lakes, and streams.

Hundreds of volunteers both on land and boat cleaned up litter around the river banks, and in the water.

"The flint River is on of our most pristine rivers and we should all protect it and keep it clean, unfortunately people think if you throw something in the water and you can't see it, it is gone, but it's not," Judy Bowles, KADB, Executive Director.

Organizers hope this event raises awareness and encourages other people to throw their trash in a garbage rather than on the ground.
