ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
An historic Albany landmark is listed on the state's top ten places in Peril.
The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation put the Tift Warehouse on the list.
It's located near Thronateeska Heritage Center on West Roosevelt Avenue.
It was built as a rail depot in 1857 by Albany founder Nelson Tift to make sure the rail line was extended to Albany.
It's the only brick depot from that time left in southwest Georgia.
SPLOST revenue is being used to stabilize the building with long-term plans for substantial renovations.
"It's preserve a resource that we can certainly use to educate folks, but use as a source to generate revenue for Thronateeska in the future. We can rent it out for functions and events. It has great character, but really telling that story of Southwest Georgia and how it developed," said Tommy Gregors, Thronateeska Executive Director.
The Places in Peril list is designed to raise awareness about and preserve Georgia's significant historic archaeological and cultural resources.
