ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, GA. (AP) - A major unit of the Georgia Air National Guard is getting a new top officer.

Col. Kevin Clotfelter was scheduled to take command Thursday of the 116th Air Control Wing based at Robins Air Force Base in middle Georgia. The unit flies the E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System aircraft - or Joint STARS. The planes are used to track enemy ground targets preparing for combat or moving across a battlefield.

Clotfelter is experienced with the E-8C aircraft and has commanded units at the squadron and group levels. He succeeds Brig. Gen. Bill Welsh, who is transferring to a new job at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington.

Maj. Gen. Jim Butterworth, the adjutant general in charge of Georgia's National Guard forces, is scheduled to speak during the ceremony.
