USPS closes Climax Post Office

CLIMAX, GA (WALB) -

Earlier this year, a website named Climax the 2nd most unfortunately named city in the country.

But this week the city received even more unfortunate news.

The town's only post office is shutting down.

"Losing our school is bad enough, but losing our post office is only going to add. We are probably going to lose population too," said Climax Resident Sandra Thomas.

Climax residents and city officials tell us they received a letter from the Postal Service on September 28th informing them about a public meeting where they could voice their opinion on the state of the post office.

That meeting is scheduled for November 8th.

"And then about the middle of October we get a letter saying the Post Office is closing on October 31st, which is obviously before the meeting, which confused all of us," said Thomas.

"They have a public hearing scheduled for the public to come and voice their views. They sent out survey forms for people to voice their views about the closing. Yet they're closing the post office on October 31st," said Climax Mayor Charles Hadsock.

The Postal Service's Public Affairs office says the Climax location had to be shut down, because it was no longer cost effective.

"The gentleman who owns the post office has reduced his rate down to $8. But however much he reduces it, they want him to go down more and more. That's one of the things they are blaming it on," said Hadsock.

While folks will still be able to buy stamps from the new Village Post Office inside S&C Grocery and Hardware, all other mailing needs will need to be handled in Whigham.

"A lot of our elderly will ride their golf carts down to the post office. Of course they won't be able to do that to Whigham," said Thomas.

The Postal Service says there will not be any layoffs as a result of the change.

After October 31st, items normally picked up at the Climax Post Office will be available at the Whigham Post Office on West Broad Avenue.
