City of Albany pays nearly $280k to firefighter

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany city commissioners voted unanimously tonight to pay nearly $280,000 to settle lawsuits from a firefighter.

Roderick Jolivette claimed discrimination after he was fired after ordering on-duty firefighters to clean up a relative's flood damaged house.

He was later reinstated and demoted.

City officials say they're ready to put the controversy behind them and move on.

"We felt it was in the city's best interest for the city and Mr. Jolivette to go our separate ways. This settles all three lawsuits and all other lawsuits, so we feel this is a good transaction," said Albany City Attorney Nathan Davis.

As a part of the settlement, Jolivette will resign, dismiss all claims against the city and agree not to seek future employment with the city.
