Georgia looks at tying college funds to success

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Georgia is looking at changing the way it funds public colleges, by linking money to performance indicators, such as graduation rates.

The plan would determine the amount of money colleges get mainly by how well students progress through college and the number of degrees awarded.

Some say the change could be positive for students and staff.

"I think it would be a positive incentive for our faculty and hopefully for our students. But especially for our faculty to make sure students get the attention they need. We have the right programs so they want to stay and graduate. And if funding is based on graduation rates, I think that's a challenge we want to take," said Dr. Richard Green, the ASU Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The current formula is driven by enrollment and how many credits students take.

A group appointed by Governor Nathan Deal signed off on a draft, but details of the plan haven't been finalized.
