ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
On Saturday, November 3 at 5:00PM at the Knights of Columbus, friends of Nick Widner are sponsoring a fund raiser for him. Call 886-6424 for more information.
They're auctioning a deep sea excursion, hunting trips, shotguns and rifles, and many other prizes. There's also BBQ, a bar, and live entertainment.
Nick was diagnosed May 2, 2012 with osteosarcoma, at type of bone cancer that usually occurs in the long bones of the body.
In Nick's case, the tumor was on his right femur bone/knee and with a few small (1 mm or less) that metastasized to his lungs.
Chemotherapy started within days of his diagnosis. After three months of Chemo, the tumor was removed along with 9 inches of his femur bone and replaced with a titanium rod and total knee replacement.
The surgery on the knee and femur replacement was successful and the tumor biopsy showed the therapy killed 95% of the cancer cells. However, a major nerve was stretched during surgery causing numbness in the foot and ankle.
Nick is currently receiving physical therapy four times a week and learning to walk again and regain feeling in his foot/ankle. He is also receiving chemotherapy almost weekly to kill any remaining cancer cells.
He will see a lung specialist following the Chemo and may have to under go surgery to have the small spots removed.
Nick is a vibrant 6 foot tall 14 year old that will keep you laughing and definitely keep you on your toes. He has a huge heart and loves his family and friends.
He has been so strong and mature through all of this and continues to show determination to beat this horrible disease.
