Deer hunters expect good season

Posted: Updated:
LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

After a busy opening weekend to deer hunting season, hunters are expecting a good year.

They say cooler weather and lunar phase made for a successful opening weekend.  And that means more business for processing plants.

"It's early in the season, but I've experienced where I'm hunting the deer have been moving due to the cool weather. The mornings have been nice. I've been seeing five or six deer every morning so far," said Ed Forrest, who's been hunting for 33 years.

But Forrest has noticed an increase in coyotes.

"I have heard coyotes every evening since I've been here, so there does seem to be a population increase on coyotes. I didn't notice it as much last year, but this year they seem to be pretty active and I've seen quite a few tracks," said Forrest.

He says say that hasn't had an impact on hunting yet, but it could become problematic for the deer population, as coyotes prey on young deer.

Hunters are limited to a dozen deer annually.  Deer hunting season runs through mid-January.
