Organizers hope fundraiser's help pay for WWII memorial

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Organizers planning to build a World War Two memorial in Albany now estimate the project will cost $20,000. And they're increasing their fundraising efforts to pay for it.

American Legion Post 30 leaders hope to dedicate the monument next Memorial Day.

The 19 by 8 and a half foot granite memorial will be built at Veteran's Park near the Civic Center.

86-year-old John Sadler is one of the World War Two veterans who dreamed of the memorial to honor his family and friends who died in the war.

Organizers want to complete the project quickly so as many aging World War Two vets as possible will be able to see it.

"They are dying off at a pretty good pace and I would like to see it up by Memorial Day," said Nick Nicholson, American Legion Post 30 Project Officer

Last year, American Legion Post 30 volunteers saluted 36 World War Two veterans at their funerals.

They've volunteered at 14 funerals so far this year.

If you'd like to help them build the World War II memorial send donations to:
