ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

One of the nation's top experts on malnutrition in children is working with peanut scientists in Dawson to save lives in Africa and around the world.

Pediatrician and Dr. Mark Manary from St. Louis has spent much of the last 25 years in Southeast Africa treating malnourished children.

He wants Peanut Lab Scientists in Dawson to find a way to use genetic research to pack extra nutrients into peanuts as they are grown nutrients that must be added on now.

"Somebody adds a powder to them, or that kind of stuff. But here if we can get the peanut just to have more iron or more folic acid the way it grows, that would be particularly helpful," said Dr. Mark Manary, Child Malnutrition Expert.

Dr. Manary says adopting peanut-based food to treat malnourished children in Africa proved to be a "game changer" in his work, drastically decreasing mortality rates.

Now he wants to work with South Georgia researchers to save even more kids.
