Pep rally encourages reading

Posted: Updated:
THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Most pep rallies fire up football teams.

This one fired up students to read.

The Thomas County Central High School band, football players, and cheerleaders helped the staff at Garrison Pilcher Elementary promote literacy and encourage the students to read Friday.

"If parents will read to their children, it helps so very much. We ask that they read a book a night. And you know a good reader makes a good student. And so if we have great readers, than we have great students," said Media Specialist Darlene Cook.

Governor Deal introduced the Early Literacy Initiative this year with a goal of improving the percentage of children reading at or above grade level.
