ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Business owners, students and concerned citizens gathered in front of the downtown Albany post office armed with signs and powerful messages in their fight to keep it open.
The rally was organized by city commissioner Roger Marietta, he says he's not confident a six month lease extension will end up the way we all hope so he's hoping this rally makes an impact on congress.
The property manager of the building that houses the post office says she already has three people who've come forward interested in taking over operations after the lease extension runs out, but some folks like Marietta want the United States Postal Service to stay.
Some came with signs, some with a powerful message and others just came to show support. But all of these people have one thing in common they don't want this post office to close down.
The man behind the rally is City Commissioner Roger Marietta.
"Sometimes a rally has value in that is shows a lot of people are concerned," said Roger Marietta, City Commissioner.
Marietta says privatizing a post office may be a fair compromise but not the best one out there.
He's also urging folks to urge congress to support the postal service reform bill
"There is a bigger issue than just the post master, congress needs to end the bickering and pass this bill and then this postal service wouldn't be under the threat to close," said Marietta.
There is also a petition going around to keep it open. So far, hundreds of folks have signed it and they are expecting to have thousands after the weekend.
