City provides inside info on Post Office efforts

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Downtown Albany Post Office was originally set to close on December 2nd when the current lease expires.

But Wednesday afternoon, the property manager for the old Federal Courthouse which houses the Post office said the US Postal Service said they want to extend the lease for six months.

Thursday morning, Assistant City Manager Wes Smith provided some information on efforts that took place behind the scenes aimed at keeping the old D'town Post Office open.

Smith says: On Monday, October 15, 2012, a contingent led by Mayor Dorothy Hubbard and County Chairman Jeff Sinyard met with Ron Bradley Postmaster for the North Florida District.

The purpose of the meeting was to gather information on the proposed closure of the downtown postal facility, and to discuss options that might delay or stop the closure.

One of the options discussed was a delay of the closure to allow for negotiations of an alternate privately managed postal operation at the downtown facility.  The Monday meeting proved fruitful with the recent announcement of a six month lease extension to pursue this option.

This is a positive turn of events, but local citizens that use the facility may communicate their concerns to their Senatorial and Congressional representatives as well as representatives of USPS.

Mr. Bradley may be reached by mail sent to:
1501 S. Slappey Blvd.
Albany GA 31706.
