D’town Albany post office may stay open longer

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany city commissioner says he's happy to hear the downtown post office may not shut down in six weeks, but he'll go ahead with a rally in support of the facility.

Wednesday afternoon, the property manager for the old Federal Courthouse downtown told us the US Postal Service called her and told her they want to extend the lease for six months.

The post office was originally set to close on December 2nd when the current lease expires.

City Commissioner Roger Marietta says he's happy to hear about the extension but says people in Albany deserve more.

"I just don't think we can be satisfied as a city with a temporary compromise. We have to have something that is completely satisfactory to not only the businesses but the governments that use and depend on this post office," said Marietta.

Commissioner Marietta invites anyone who wants the post office to stay open to join him for a rally there Friday at 2 pm.

The property manager hopes a private company will eventually be able to run the facility to keep it from closing for good.
