ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany city commissioner is organizing a rally to try to keep the downtown post office open.

Johnny Williams runs a shoeshine business in the post office.  During Monday's meeting he urged city commissioners to continue reaching out to officials to prevent the branch from closing.

In response, Commissioner Roger Marietta announced a demonstration this Friday at 2:00pm on the post office steps.

"It's going to impact a lot of people and I think the post office understands that. But if we don't ratchet up the pressure, they're not going to change it. So we need to change their minds and I think getting public participation and channeling that towards the post office and toward our federal representation is the way to do it," said Marietta.

The United States Postal Service, struggling under oceans of red ink, recently announced that the old main Post Office on Broad Avenue and Jefferson Street would close when its lease expires on December 2nd.
