ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As the coldest weather so far this season hits this week, you may pull out the space heaters for the first time. But you need to use caution if you do.

Firefighters say to make sure space heaters are at least three feet away from anything and make sure they have automatic shut-off devices.

"Main thing you want to do is have your heating systems checked. They need to be check annual by a qualified technician. Any time of space heaters or additional heating systems you have that like, of course you want to exercise caution make sure that space heater has a device on it that allows it to turn off if it's knocked over, don't have anything around it within three feet," says Daniel Potter with the Albany Fire Department.

Firefighters also say you should check your fireplace for creosol buildups so they don't release dangerous vapors and to test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure you're ready for cool weather.
