DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -
A Dougherty County Commissioner will be appointed to the Library Board of Trustees.
Commissioners gave final approval Monday to a plan recommended by the Government Affairs committee.
The commission is waiting to appoint a commissioner until current members decide if they want to stay on when their terms expires at the end of the year.
"Once we understand whether or not they want to remain on the board, the Governmental Affairs committee will reconvene and determine how to actually place a member of the board of commissioners to the board of trustees," explained Gloria Gaines, Dougherty County Commissioner.
The decision comes after commissioners were caught off guard by the library board's decision over the summer to close two branches.
"We believe since they receive such a large chunk of money that we need to improve communications between the two bodies," said Gaines.
The commission is also requesting that the library board of trustees appear before the commission annually to provide a full report.
