DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -
Dougherty County Commissioners voted Monday to rezone a piece of property for a pecan orchard, but not without a fight from nearby residents.
120 acres of land on Old Pretoria Road will be rezoned from commercial to agricultural for a pecan orchard for Molly Willis Pecans.
Eddie and Shirley Nelson, who live close by told commissioners they're concerned the spraying will impact their health.
Commissioners did increase the buffer between the Nelson's property and the orchard from 75 to 150 feet.
"They gave us a little bit of leeway as far as the property is concerned. But I think they did alright as far as handling it and we just want to make sure that everything is straightened out before they get started with the trees," said Eddie Nelson.
No spraying will take place until five years after the trees are planted.
Commissioners requested that the pecan company notify nearby residents before spraying and give out information about the possible health effects from spraying.
"I really thank them for that, because in fact we need to know what they're putting out there. And we have wells and we don't want anything to get into our water," said Nelson.
