SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

Long-time Sheriff Freddie Thompkins is retiring, and there will soon be a new sheriff in Worth County for the first time in nearly three decades.

Republican Challenger Jeff Hobby will face Democratic Challenger John "JD" Daniel in the general election in November.

Both candidates are campaigning hard, going door to door asking people for their votes.

"Plan on bringing a positive, doing something about the domestic violence, we are going to do something about he drugs, and we are going to try to stay within the means of the budget without raising the budget," said Daniel.

"Better trained deputies will help them understand what they need to do and how they can perform their jobs better," said Hobby.

Hobby has a degree in Criminal Justice and has been with the Georgia State Patrol for 11 years.

Daniel worked for the Albany Police Department for 10 years before working as a deputy with Worth County Sheriff's Office for 19 years.
