ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An inmate at Telfair State Prison is blamed in an attack that left correctional officer dead.

A spokesperson with the Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed the officer died Thursday night.

"On October 11, 2012, Officer Larry Stell was assaulted by an inmate at Telfair State Prison," said Gwendolyn Hogan in a news release. "The incident resulted in the death of Officer Stell."

"Officer Stell was 46 years old and began his career with the Department in August 2001.  The incident is still under investigation, therefore the Department cannot comment further."

The inmate who is suspected was not identified.

Last November, the prison was placed on lockdown and three inmates were injured after a riot broke out over illegally-smuggled cell phones.
