ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

HIV cases are up across the state and in Southwest Georgia.

Officials at the Rural Clinic in Albany say through July of this year, they treated 262 people who are HIV positive in Dougherty County.

Georgia ranks eighth in the nation in the number of cases of AIDS, which is caused by HIV.

Rural Clinic Officials say you need to be proactive to protect yourself from the illness.

"You have to protect yourself. You cannot count on the person that you're with to know if they are HIV positive, and if they do know, then telling you they are," said Terri Moncus with the Rural Clinic in Albany

Moncus says there are many people who have HIV and don't know it.

She encourages men and women of all races and ages to get tested.
