Monroe faces big battle at Americus-Sumter

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Fall break is over in region 1-AAAA.

All eight teams taking a bye week last week and on Friday it is back to the task of seeing who wins the region title and claims the four playoff berths.

One of the key games in the region race this week is in Americus.

The Americus-Sumter Panthers will host Monroe.

The Panthers under acting head coach Chris Wade have won their first two region games.

Monroe is 1-1 and the Tornadoes know a second region loss will likely end their hopes of a region title.

This matchup is pretty even with both teams having veteran quarterbacks, strong running games and good defenses.

Monroe coach Charles Truitt thinks the region wide open week in the middle of the season will have them physically ready for this game and the final month of the regular season.

Charles Truitt said. "We are hoping this open week will help out and get some key kids that we have been counting on and have been hurt well. We feel good about those kids playing and about our chances. We have got to take it one week at a time. It starts with a team that is undefeated (in the region) and has a good ballclub."

Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Americus and WALB will have highlights at 11:00 p.m. Friday in the Locker Room.
