ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A group of special athletes in Albany received a treat, Wednesday night, a few days before they head off for a big competition.

The Masters Level Special Olympic softball team got new athletic gear including warm-up suits, shorts, two shirts, shoes, socks and a backpack.

Donors who put the giveaway together say they want the athletes to be the best looking team at the state games and they hope the new threads bring team unity.

"The unity that it brings, for all to have on the same colors and those types of things and a lot of resources aren't there for these athletes. So to have a good pair of shoes and a good warm up uniform... (it's good) to have that pride that you get with that," said donor Phil Hajek.

The 2012 Fall Special Olympic games in Dalton begin with an opening ceremony Friday night at 7:30.
