Students learn about fire safety

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Often house fires end in tragedy but many of the injuries and deaths could be prevented with good preparation.

Wednesday hundreds of Dougherty County students learned about fire safety at the Albany Civic Center.

They heard songs on topics such as how to stop, drop and roll and the importance of having a second way out of a room.

The way fire safety is taught has changed over the years, but the importance has not.

Chief James Carswell of the Albany Fire Department said, "now it's more interactive because kids have changed as far as how they're entertained and we tried to adjust to the media, per se.  So we're getting that message out so it reaches the audience that we want."

Chief Carswell hopes the interactive nature of the show will help students remember the lessons and will encourage them to talk to their parents about what to do if there were a fire in their home.
