ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County school board members met behind closed doors for less than 30 minutes- discussing Superintendent Joshua Murfree's contract.

"This is not an unusual event," said school board attorney, Tommy Coleman. "The board meets and discusses their intended actions with regards to the superintendent's contract. Always they do that months in advance of the end of the contract."

While school board members can meet in executive session - all votes must be made in public. However, Wednesday's session was adjourned with no action.

Murfree's three year contract is up June 7th. School board members have five options. They can renew his contract, let it expire, or terminate immediately- by a mutual agreement, unilaterally, which means he would get paid until the end of his contract, or by cause.

"I don't know exactly how that will transpire this time, this was a preliminary discussion of that. I couldn't tell you if they did make a decision," said Coleman.

Finding a new superintendent could take some time. But state code says board members can start searching and even hire a replacement a year before his contract is up.

"If they chose to do that they would obviously want some time to do that. But that decision was not discussed today and that was not part of this deliberation," said Coleman.

Murfree's hiring back in March 2010 was controversial. Consultants ranked him 34th on the list of qualified candidates.

And over the past two years the school system has been in hot water beginning with the CRCT cheating scandal. They've since received numerous letters from state and federal officials requesting information about Title one funds, grants and the free and reduced lunch program.

The latest letter, coming from the state school superintendent sent October 2nd, requesting financial records.

Board members won't say much about their discussions.

"It was a personnel matter. And anything I insinuate, hint, or try to say, I would be out of order and it's against the law," said Chairman Rev. James Bush.

Currently no additional meetings are scheduled to talk about Murfree's contract.

Board members don't have a deadline to make their decision.
