State officials assist in keeping post office open

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany city leaders may get some help as they try to keep the downtown post office open.

Tuesday, city commissioners received their annual federal lobbyist report.  They learned Congressman Sanford Bishop sent a letter to postal officials.

Commissioners were told they've done a good job drawing attention to the issue, but now they need to look at how much money the closing of the post office will cost the city and county.

Commissioners were caught of guard last week by news that the Postal Service will close the branch when the lease in the old federal courthouse expires.

The post office is set to close December 2nd.
