VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A memorial service will be held at Valdosta State University Friday for former school president Dr. Hugh Bailey.

The 83-year-old, who retired from VSU in 2001, died Friday.

He was the longest serving president in the University System of Georgia.

During his tenure, he oversaw the transition to university status in 1993.

"He was just one of these people that lived for Valdosta State, he and his wife Joan were truly ambassadors for this campus and this community. Known throughout the state, he was just a beloved person and greatly missed," said Thressea Boyd, VSU Communications Director.

Friday's memorial is at 3:30 at the Whitehead Auditorium.
