Commissioners address Medicare concerns

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Medicare benefits for current city of Albany retirees are safe.

That's not true for future retirees.

Today... it was standing room only as city commissioners discussed eliminating funding for the retiree medicare part B reimbursement.

That would save the city 400-thousand dollars a year.

Former city commissioner Joann Pope encouraged commissioners to think about the hundreds of retirees who rely on that money.

Retirees 65 and older, along with their spouses, get $96.40 a month.

"They've been receiving this for 32 years, this has been in effect. And to take it away now in their old years is not right. It's not going to bother me that much, I can get by, but they can't," said Pope, who's also a retired city clerk.

Tuesday, commissioners were presented with four options, they voted on moving forward with two.

They plan to grandfather in existing post-65 retirees, but they eliminated the reimbursement for new retirees starting January 1st.   And to receive the money, all post-65 retirees must present their Medicare cards to the Human Resources Department to verify their enrollment.

They'll take a final vote October 23rd.
