The Dougherty County School System could lose $880,000 in School Improvement Grant money if a new Albany High School principal isn't hired soon.
The system got a letter from the state Department of Education saying a permanent principal must be in place by October 19th. The letter also stated that state officials must be involved in the hiring process. They want to make sure the principal who is hired understands how to utilize the SIG money properly.
Assistant Principal Scott Horton has served on an interim basis since former principal Angela Shumate was removed because she was named in the CRCT cheating report.
Monday night, the school board voted to offer her a new contract based on a tribunal panel's recommendation, but board members did not assign her a position.
School policy requires the system to advertise a position for at least ten days before moving to hire anyone. The staff plans to get clarification Tuesday from state officials about how to proceed.
Also Monday night, the board delayed a vote on another teacher accused of CRCT cheating. The tribunal panel ruled the board should follow the superintendent's recommendation not to renew Nikki Lyons' contract.
