Update: Bomb Squad called to Lowndes gas station

A Lowndes County Welco gas station and Wendy's restaurant are back open tonight after a GBI bomb squad blew up a suspicious bag left inside the building.

The bomb squad arrived at the station on Madison Highway around two this afternoon after K-9 unit alerted officers that there was something dangerous in the shaving bag.

A robot removed it from the store and officers blew it up.

They found nothing explosive but won't know for sure until test results come back from the crime lab.

"Once the dog alerted on it three different times, of course we evacuated the building and called GBI bomb squad and they came down and of course designated it, went in with a robot and designated the contents," said Sheriff Chris Prine, LCSO.

The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office is looking for the man who left the toiletry bag inside the gas station just to question him.

The GBI bomb squad now tells us they do not believe a package left at a convenience store contained explosives.

Deputies were called to the WilCo gas station on Madison Highway around noon.

The Sheriff says a man workers said was a regular customer bought a Coke and left what was later determined to be a shaving kit on the counter.

The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office called in a bomb squad from Cairo to investigate.

The dog alerted three times, so officials brought in a robot to remove the kit from the store.

Investigators blew it up but now say it was not dangerous.

They do hope to talk to the man who left it there.
