ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Several Dougherty County Commissioners say the idea of consolidating the Dougherty County Police Department and Sheriff's Office needs to be dropped for good.

Monday, police Chief Don Cheek met with the Public Safety Committee and addressed concerns about consolidating.

The idea was brought up as commissioners look for ways to save money.

Cheek says he wants to give his officers some certainty about the future of DCP.

"The officers need to know that their department is still going to be here.  So they can go out and provide the service and quality service they have with 100 percent attention to that, instead of being concerned about other issues," said Don Cheek, Chief of Dougherty County Police.

Cheek says the two agencies perform vital, but different functions.

The committee is recommending to the full commission that no action be taken to combine the two departments.
